Paying another agent to cover a showing in Arizona

You can ask another licensed agent to cover a showing in Arizona. You cannot pay them directly for it. The compensation has to reach them through their employing broker.

What A.R.S. § 32-2155(A), with § 32-2163(A) says

“A broker shall employ and pay only active licensees, and a licensee shall accept employment and compensation as a licensee only from …”
Read § 32-2155 — Arizona State Legislature ↗

Arizona splits the rule across two sections. This link opens § 32-2155, which binds the licensee receiving payment; § 32-2163(A), which binds the broker paying it, is at azleg.gov/ars/32/02163.htm.

The sentence continues into a short list, and the broker the licensee is licensed to is the first item on it; the only other route is a professional corporation or LLC the licensee is licensed through. Arizona states the other half in a separate section, § 32-2163(A): it is unlawful for a broker to employ or compensate, directly or indirectly, any person for acts within the chapter unless that person is a licensed Arizona broker, or a salesperson licensed under that same broker. So the agent receiving payment may take it only from their own broker, and the firm paying may pay only its own people or another brokerage. Accepting compensation from anyone not authorised is separately a ground for suspension or revocation under § 32-2153.

What that means for an Arizona agent

The version to avoid

A text message, a favour, and a payment app. The money goes from one salesperson to another, neither employing broker is told, and nothing is recorded.

The version that holds up

The fee is agreed up front, the required forms are signed before the job proceeds, the employing broker can see the assignment and what was paid, and the showing leaves a record.

Licensure is the firm's responsibility in Arizona, as everywhere: the employing broker is the party the state holds accountable for supervising affiliated agents. ShowingMarket does not claim to verify licences — it records who attested to them. An agent onboarded by their brokerage carries that firm's attestation; an agent who joined alone is labelled self-reported.

ShowingMarket gives your employing broker oversight on payment: the fee agreed up front, your firm's required forms enforced before the job proceeds, and a record of the assignment and what was paid. It is not a broker and does not route compensation to a firm on your behalf — payouts are made to the covering agent's own connected Stripe account. Information, not legal advice: your employing broker and the Arizona real estate commission are the authorities on your situation.

Arizona questions

Can an Arizona salesperson be paid directly by another agent for covering a showing?

No — A.R.S. § 32-2155(A), with § 32-2163(A) requires that compensation reach the salesperson through their employing broker.

Is covering another agent's open house allowed in Arizona?

Yes. Agent-to-agent coverage is ordinary, lawful work in Arizona — what the statute regulates is how the money moves, not whether one licensed agent may cover for another.

Who verifies that a covering agent in Arizona holds a valid licence?

The brokerage. Arizona licenses and holds the employing broker responsible for supervising the agents affiliated with the firm, so licensure is verified by the firm that affiliates the agent — not by a marketplace, which carries none of that accountability.
